About adaptive sports

International Inclusive Committee – Adaptive Sports, Equal Opportunity
Adaptive sport is a form of physical activity that takes into account the individual’s needs for self-development, comparison of one’s abilities with others, as well as communication, socialization and adaptation. The main goal of adaptive sports is to form a sports culture among people with disabilities, the main goal of adaptive sports is to help people with disabilities achieve outstanding results in various sports, competing with those who also face similar requirements.
Adaptive sports and equal opportunity are concerned with creating an environment in which people with different physical and mental characteristics can participate in sports and compete on an equal basis with others. This is an important aspect of inclusion and social justice.
The core principles of adaptive sports and equal opportunity include:

  1. Availability. Ensuring access to sports facilities, equipment and activities for people with disabilities. This may include improving accessibility, creating specialized sports facilities and equipment as an example of a site for adaptive GTO, which we are now beginning to actively implement in the regions, as well as training staff to work with adaptive athletes; our organization, with the support of NSU named after Lesgafta, conducts training, “ advanced training” for regional specialists, free of charge, in the area of adaptive physical culture and sports.
  2. Training and support. Providing specialized training and medical support for adaptive athletes. This may include physical therapy, rehabilitation and individual coaching to help each athlete reach their maximum potential.
  3. Adaptation of rules and formats. Almost always, adaptation of the rules and formats of competitions is required to take into account the characteristics of different groups and nosologies of athletes.
  4. Promotion of adaptive sports. Development of adaptive sports and raising awareness of this important aspect of sports life. This must necessarily include the organization of individual, mass adaptive competitions and events, as well as media campaigns and educational programs.
  5. Promoting inclusion.
Also, it is imperative to conduct inclusive events to develop sports and maintain equal opportunities, this gives not only an understanding of their importance and equality to people with disabilities, but also freedom of action, for example, we hold the largest in Russia, the All-Russian adaptive Run, in As part of the ZaBeg half marathon, we invite everyone to participate; in 2024, more than 40 regions and 8 countries will take part.
Problems and solutions in the field of adaptive sports and equal opportunity include the following aspects:
    Problems:
    – Limited access to resources. Not all adaptive sports have access to the same resources and funding as traditional sports. This affects the number of types of adaptive sports and the quality of training; our organization supports regional clubs and government institutions in adaptive sports, through funding or donating equipment.
  • Lack of information. Not all people are aware of the opportunities that adaptive sports provide and how to participate in them. This results in an insufficient number of athletes and limits their choice.
    Solutions:
    – Improved accessibility. It is important to ensure that sports facilities and equipment are accessible to everyone. This may require modifications to infrastructure as well as training of staff to better serve athletes with disabilities.
    – Development and awareness. Organizing information campaigns and events aimed at developing and popularizing adaptive sports will help attract more participants and spectators. This may also include educational programs to increase awareness in the community.
  • Inclusive education. The development of inclusive sports programs in schools and universities will help foster interest in adaptive sports among young people and create a foundation for future athletes.
Thus, adaptive physical education and adaptive sports represent a powerful means for the social integration of people with special needs into society. They help restore or establish contact with the outside world. However, in our country the importance of physical activity and sports for people with disabilities is underestimated. Therefore, the main task is to attract as many people with disabilities as possible to physical education and adaptive sports and create conditions for the successful integration of people with disabilities, including people with disabilities, into society.
